Monty Python’s Terry Jones joins the choir invisible

Terry's first wife, Alison Telfer is an accomplished biochemist. I'd meet up with her occasionally at London photosynthesis meetings (she did a lot of work on Photosystem II function and regulation). A scream in the pub afterwards.
Does she like photography?

I'm sorry but it just had to be done.

Yes, and, as this is a solemn day, I'm not going to say "I bet she does". Although she probably wouldn't mind if I did.

I agree, in that Jones was not my favorite Python. However as a consumer, I'm inclined to bias my judgment towards those whose acting or delivery strikes my fancy more, which unfortunately neglects the actual writing or producing. And from what I've read, Jones was instrumental in creating the overall feel and tone of the show. And for that, I raise my glass.

What a tough year for those that helped define who I am.

Sigh. Neil Peart earlier in the month and now Terry Jones.

I always though Terry was the great straight man in many of the sketches.

RIP Terry (and Neil)

Edit: Was thinking Terry Jones was the Lumberjack based on bad old memories. That was Michael Palin. Jones was a writer of the lyrics.

RIP.

He helped make untold millions of people laugh, which is something anyone would be proud of.

It was rather sad to see how hard he was struggling during 2014's Monty Python Live (Mostly) (which I did not watch until after the diagnosis announcement) but it was great that they were able to do it one last time.

Dementia is truly frightening. Who are you? Not anymore.

I think he would take it as a mark of pride were we to simply say of his contributions: "He's been a naughty boy!"*

And, Eric, as to this:
I was probably 11 or 12 years old when I became aware of the groundbreaking British comedy troupe, and Monty Python’s Flying Circus was instant appointment viewing for me on KRMA, Denver’s PBS affiliate. The problem was timing. I could stay up until Python started at 10pm on a Saturday night, but I had to slog through some uninspiring TV to get there.

Same for me, but it was on a Sunday night out of the Chicago PBS station, which meant I also had to convince my dad it was okay for me to do this on a school night.

edit: eh, daemonios beat me to it.

I guess I avoid non-Ars news too much and didn't even see about Peart. Boo. Today is extra frownie, now.

Time for me to pull out my old VCR library and see if I still have a working player.

I bought the most recent DVD release of the entire series (having been promised that, finally, this one was free of edits), and I'm glad to say that the transfer looks incredible.

If you can, splurge.

EDIT: Blu-Ray, not DVD. My age is showing.

There was an article a year or two ago in the NY Times? Maybe? I forget where. But it discussed how, post-diagnosis, Michael Palin (with whom Terry most often paired with for writing duties within the troupe) made it a point to visit Terry at his home regularly, and to walk around the grounds together as old friends. And how, over time, Terry became less and less able to communicate and seemed less aware of who Palin was and the history they had shared; how they mostly just walked silently, and how Palin cherished that time.

It was a deeply sad yet loving reflection on the decay of his life-long writing partner and friend. And thinking of it now, and Terry's passing, reminds me how much harder the loss of creatives and artists who have delighted and influenced me hits than other public figures, no matter how noble.

RIP.

Palin related in a recent interview that he recently visited Jones and brought a copy of Bert Fegg’s Encyclopaedia of All World Knowledge, a book the two of them wrote together back in the '80s -- and that Terry laughed, but only at the parts he'd written himself.
